Life is full of daunting climbs – asking that special someone out, graduating college, having kids; climbing is what makes us more enlightened and intelligent human beings. The business world has its own fair share of climbs especially for entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs take an idea, pour their heart and soul into it, and attempt to bring it to market for money. Entrepreneurship is an art suited only for madmen. These madmen propel society forward, drive economies, and improve the world around them by chasing their dreams. Being an entrepreneur, like climbing Everest requires bravery, perseverance, and passion to take the first step, reach, or jump to success. The key to success is to just start climbing.

The Climb of the Millennium

In May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary – a humble beekeeper from New Zealand – and his partner Tenzing Norgay of Nepal conquered what is indisputably the world’s most daunting challenge: summiting Mount Everest. This feat of mankind, rivaled only by the Moon Landing or powered flight, was an incredible example of man’s innate ability to defy the impossible. The accomplishment was celebrated internationally and while many awards were given, and celebrations held, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were simply feeding their desire to be challenged and to adventure into the unknown. Their journey continues to serve as an inspiration to people around the world through their lessons of bravery, perseverance, and passion.

Bravery

The hardest part of starting a business is taking the first step – you could have spent years brainstorming your business, planning the market entry, developing growth hacks, and marketing strategies – although incredibly hard work at times it simply cannot compare to finally taking the chance and risking it all on your business idea.

Why? Fear. Fear of failure, what others think of you, the unknown- these fears are incredibly valid and stand in the way of your success. But it is crucial to not allow these fears and apprehensions to not get in the way of achieving your business goals. Cast aside all your doubts and take the first step in making your business idea a reality.

Perseverance

Taking the first step is the hardest to do, the second most difficult task is persevering into the unknown. No matter the amount of leg work you have completed before you start climbing you will undoubtedly encounter huge obstacles that will discourage you. Sometimes it will feel as you plug one hole in the ship, 4 more appear behind you. But pushing through is how you and your associates will learn the important lessons that will spur exponential growth down the road. In troubling times you have to be ready to dig deep and push through the barriers before you and inversely it’s equally as important to celebrate the small successes that will eventually come along the way.

Passion

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Work worth doing is, in and of itself work that you are passionate about. Being passionate about what you are doing is crucial to your success. The key distinguishment is that people will say “Oh, I’m passionate about money, that’s why I continue to work at this,” money isn’t a passion, it’s a result of your labors. Passion for your work means that you truly believe in the work that you are doing – you believe in its cause, its mission.

Work without passion is rather pointless because your heart and soul aren’t in it. Without passion, you might be able to conjure up the bravery to take the first step in starting a business but you certainly will not persevere when things go awry. Truly successful businesses have passion as their foundations.
